Finasteride

Finasteride (Proscar) is a very potent type II 5a-reductase inhibitor, which prevents conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a sex hormone. In addition, it is used for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is the enlargement of the prostate.

Description

Introduction

Finasteride may improve symptoms of BPH and provide benefits such as decreased urge to urinate, better urine flow with less straining, less of a feeling that the bladder is not completely emptied, and decreased nighttime urination.

Compared to many “gimmick” treatments, with dubious results, finasteride delivers, helping over 80% of men stop losing hair, with regrowth rates over 60% after two years of treatment.

Bodybuilders use it to help protect their head hair, better known as hair-loss prevention.

How it works?

Finasteride inhibits 4a-reductase, and as mentioned, will prevent testosterone conversion to DHT. Studies have shown it will reduce serum DHT levels by about 65-70%, and prostate DHT levels, by up to 90%. By blocking DHT production, finasteride reduces androgen activity on the scalp; and in the prostate reduces prostate volume, which improves BPH, and reduces risk of prostate cancer.

Side Effects

Side effects include:
● Erectile dysfunction (ED)
● Decreased libido
● Impotence
● Decreased muscle mass
● Possible depression
● Mood swings

More information

Finasteride is used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for male to female transsexuals, stacked with estrogen. Use in women has not been approved, and there is evidence of birth defects in fetuses with pregnant women.

Dosages

Bodybuilders will dose Finasteride at 1mg per day to preserve hair. This is usually done during their DHT cycles.

Conclusion

Bodybuilders will want to inhibit this conversion as much as possible to preserve hair loss, which is why finasteride is used. This is especially true when using DHT derivative anabolic steroids. Finasteride does a good job at keeping existing hair, and in almost half of men it will help grow more hair. However, as you will see below, this may come at a cost as inhibiting sex hormone (DHT), which isn’t the wisest decision.

Started the drug in January 2020 and now almost May. Took a while for me to know if the drug was working since I saw no visible improvements until after I had been on it for 3 months. Adding on to that, during those 3 months I had no clue if I was even responding to the drug since I had absolutely no side effects whatsoever, not even minimal side effects, just nothing (I typically view side effects as a way of knowing if the drug works and having absolutely none was concerning). Despite delayed positive effects I consider this drug to be the saving grace to my self confidence. Only rating 8 stars at the moment since I am satisfied with what has happened so far but I am hoping as I continue taking the drug I can get even better results.

I noticed my hair starting to thin at the age of 18. Heard about the drug but I left it for a year, where I noticed constant hair loss (in the shower, on the pillow etc). I finally decided to do something about it 19 months ago. I’d say I didn’t see the effects up until about 5 months ago. I shaved my head completely just to be sure and I’m quite certain that its thicker than before. I wouldn’t think so but looking at photos from a year ago I recon it’s safe to say (I was on the ropes lol, grew my hair out long to compensate). My hair still falls out in the shower, but at a lower rate. I think I must be one of those middle of the road guys, haven’t seen too many reviews like that though! Libido still like a stallion, if anything I recon it makes me last longer in bed. Long term though I think I might visit a doctor to see if there’s any way to slow it down completely by upping the dose or otherwise and to check fertility. For now I’m just happy to finish college without looking like an egg.

I’m 29 years old, I’ve been taking finasteride for three months. I m not going bald but I’m taking it to prevent it from happening. So far I have no side effects and my sex drive has been good as before I starting taking it. No other side effects.

My dad just turned 87 in March and has been taking 5mg of finasteride since 1998 for enlarged prostate– we have discussed the side effects– he has had NONE over the past 22 years– great sex drive–with no cialis—he told me his hair has gotten thicker- from my standpoint his hair is so thick it is unbelievable- he stated he has more hair now than he did in his 60s. He had no idea that finasteride produced hair growth until I told him last week. As for myself at age 56 and with a little receding hairline- I am going to start it today and see how it works for me– since I am a clone of my dad — I hope it works just as good me me as it has for him
